  44. THE COMPLETE NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS

  46. If your system meets these minimum requirements, you can use the Complete National Geographic:
  47. Processor: 80486DX 33MHz
  48. Windows 95 or Windows 3.1 (running under DOS 6.1 or higher)
  49. 8 MB RAM 
  50. 10 MB free disk space
  51. Virtual Memory Enabled (Windows 3.1 create an 8 - 12 MB swap file)
  52. VESA Standard VGA
  53. 640 x 480 resolution with 256 colors

  59. INSTALLING THE COMPLETE NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC

  61. To install The Complete National Geographic program onto your 
  62. machine, run the Setup.exe program that is included in the
  63. root directory of The Complete National Geographic CD.  When
  64. the Setup program is running, you will first see a Welcome
  65. dialog.  When you hit the Next button, you will see a 
  66. Setup Option dialog that will allow you to choose the Setup
  67. option you want to perform.  Select the 'Install The Complete 
  68. National Geographic' option, then hit the Next button.  The 
  69. Setup program will then lead you through the rest of the 
  70. program installation.

  74. UNINSTALLING THE COMPLETE NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC

  76. To uninstall The Complete National Geographic program from your 
  77. machine, run the Setup.exe program that is included in the
  78. root directory of The Complete National Geographic CD.  When
  79. the Setup program is running, you will first see a Welcome
  80. dialog.  When you hit the Next button, you will see a 
  81. Setup Option dialog that will allow you to choose the Setup
  82. option you want to perform.  Select the 'Uninstall The Complete 
  83. National Geographic' option, then hit the Next button.  The 
  84. Setup program will first determine if you currently have The
  85. Complete National Geographic program installed.  If you do
  86. have it installed, the Setup program will remove the program
  87. and its required components.  If you do not have it installed,
  88. the Setup program will show you an error message, and the
  89. Setup program will terminate.

  93. REGISTERING THE COMPLETE NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC CD SETS 
  94. ----------------------------------------------------
  95. To register a CD set with The Complete National Geographic 
  96. program installed on your machine, run the Setup.exe program 
  97. that is included in the root directory of The Complete National 
  98. Geographic CD.  When the Setup program is running, you will 
  99. first see a Welcome dialog.  When you hit the Next button, you 
  100. will see a Setup Option dialog that will allow you to choose 
  101. the Setup option you want to perform.  Select the 'Register The 
  102. Complete National Geographic CD Set' option, then hit the Next 
  103. button. The Setup program will then determine if you currently 
  104. have The Complete National Geographic program installed on your 
  105. machine. If you do not have it installed, the Setup program will 
  106. show you an error message, and the Setup program will terminate.  
  107. If you do have it installed, the Setup program will then execute 
  108. the CD registration process.  You must then restart The Complete 
  109. National Geographic program in order to use the newly registered 
  110. CD set.

  114. INSTALLING WEB LINK CAPABILITY
  115. -------------------------------
  116. To install the Web Link capability that is required to link 
  117. The Complete National Geographic program to the National 
  118. Geographic Society Web site, run the Setup.exe program that is 
  119. included in the root directory of The Complete National Geographic 
  120. CD.  When the Setup program is running, you will first see a 
  121. Welcome dialog.  When you hit the Next button, you will see a 
  122. Setup Option dialog that will allow you to choose the Setup
  123. option you want to perform.  Select the 'Install The Complete 
  124. National Geographic' option, then hit the Next button.  The 
  125. Internet Link Setup program will be launched automatically during 
  126. program installation.  If you choose not to install the Web Link 
  127. capability during the main program installation, you can manually 
  128. launch the Internet Link Setup program from the program Setup by 
  129. choosing the 'Internet Link Setup' option.

  131. The Internet Link Setup program will then search for all copies 
  132. of the Netscape Navigator and Microsoft Explorer browsers
  133. currently installed on your machine.  If the Internet Link Setup 
  134. program found any copies of the Netscape Navigator or Microsoft 
  135. Explorer browsers on your machine, you will be able to choose, 
  136. from a list of all the Netscape Navigator or Microsoft Explorer 
  137. browsers found on your machine,which browser you want The Complete 
  138. National Geographic program to use to link to the National Geographic 
  139. Society Web site.  If the Internet Link Setup program did not find 
  140. any copies of the Netscape Navigator or Microsoft Explorer browsers 
  141. on your machine, or if you want to use a different browser, you can 
  142. then do a manual search for your selected browser by hitting the Find 
  143. Browser button.  In order to properly link to the Internet with The
  144. Complete National Geographic program, your machine MUST be already 
  145. connected to the Internet, through an Online service, an Internet
  146. Service Provider, a dedicated Internet line, etc.  The Complete 
  147. National Geographic does not provide you with an Internet service,
  148. it just links to your existing Internet service.

  150. After you have successfully installed the Web Link capability, if you 
  151. want to choose a different Internet browser to link to the National 
  152. Geographic Society Web site, you need to rerun the Internet Link Setup 
  153. program.

  157. INSTALLING QUICKTIME FOR WINDOWS
  158. --------------------------------
  159. During program installation, if The Complete National Geographic Setup 
  160. program determines that you do not have QuickTime for Windows 
  161. installed on your machine, or that you do not have QuickTime for 
  162. Windows installed properly on your machine or that you have the wrong 
  163. version of QuickTime for Windows installed on your machine, the 
  164. QuickTime for Windows Setup program will be launched automatically 
  165. from within The Complete National Geographic Setup program.  The 
  166. Complete National Geographic CD is shipped with the 16-bit QuickTime 
  167. for Windows Version 2.11, which is required to properly view the 
  168. program videos in The Complete National Geographic program.

  170. You must have the 16-bit QuickTime for Windows Version 2.11 or greater 
  171. installed properly on your machine in order for The Complete National
  172. Geographic program to play program videos correctly.  If you have 
  173. 32-bit QuickTime for Windows installed, you must also install the 
  174. 16-bit QuickTime for Windows in order to view the program videos.

  178. ONLINE REGISTRATION OF THE COMPLETE NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC  
  179. --------------------------------------------------------
  180. There are three ways that The Complete National Geographic CD can be 
  181. registered online with Mindscape.  One way is from The Complete 
  182. National Geographic application.  When the application is run, if the 
  183. user did not complete the online registration yet, the online 
  184. registration dialog is displayed that allows the user to register 
  185. online with Mindscape.  Another way to register is by double clicking 
  186. on the Free Photos icon in the National Geographic folder.  This icon 
  187. is added to the National Geographic folder when The Complete National 
  188. Geographic application is installed.  Another way to register online 
  189. is from The Complete National Geographic Setup program.  When the 
  190. Setup program is running, you will first see a Welcome dialog.  When 
  191. you hit the Next button, you will see a Setup Option dialog that will 
  192. allow you to choose the Setup option you want to perform.  Select the 
  193. 'On-Line Registration' option, then hit the Next button.  The online
  194. registration dialog will then be displayed.  You cannot register 
  195. online from the Setup program if The Complete National Geographic has 
  196. not been installed already.

  200. RUNNING THE COMPLETE NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC UNDER LOW MEMORY 
  201. --------------------------------------------------------- 
  202. If you are running The Complete National Geographic CD under low 
  203. memory conditions, the application may not operate as well as
  204. possible.  You may not be able to get to every area in the 
  205. application, depending on how much memory is available.  The magazine
  206. photos may be displayed at a lower resolution than your current screen
  207. resolution and/or it may run slowly.  The introduction and exit video 
  208. playback may be very choppy and the audio may not be synchronized 
  209. with the video.  Also, the video picture might look unsatisfactory and 
  210. the audio might be inaudible.

  212. For the best application performance, it is recommended that you have 
  213. as much memory available as possible before running The Complete National 
  214. Geographic CD.  It is also recommended that you enable virtual memory 
  215. before running the application.  If you are running under Windows 3.1, you
  216. should establish a swap file that is between 8 - 12 MB in size.

  220. PROBLEMS WITH THE COMPLETE NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC VIDEOS
  221. ---------------------------------------------------------
  222. If you are experiencing problems with The Complete National Geographic
  223. videos, there are a few factors that could be causing the problems.  
  224. One factor is memory.  You must make sure that you are not currently 
  225. very low in system resources.  Try closing all other applications and 
  226. make sure that virtual memory is being used.  Another factor is the 
  227. graphics screen driver.  Make sure you are using updated screen drivers 
  228. and also screen drivers that are specific to your current graphics card.
  229. Another factor is the CD drive.  If the CD drive speed is slower than the
  230. required minimum CD drive speed, this might cause problems with video
  231. playback.  The minimum required CD drive speed is 2X.

  235. PROBLEMS WITH LAUNCHING WEB BROWSERS
  236. -------------------------------------  
  237. Whenever you click on the Web button in The Complete National Geographic,
  238. the Internet browser of your choice should be launched and you should be
  239. brought directly to The National Geographic Society web site.  
  240.  
  241. If you find that the Internet browser is not being launched properly:  
  242. Make sure that you are not trying to launch a 32-bit Internet browser 
  243. in Windows 3.1; Make sure the Internet browser works fine outside of The
  244. Complete National Geographic. 
  245.  
  246. If you find that the Internet browser is being launched, but you are not
  247. being brought to The National Geographic Society web site:  Make sure that
  248. your Internet connection is working correctly;  Sometimes, if the maximum
  249. number of connections is already connected to The National Geographic
  250. Society web site, you will not be able to connect until there is another
  251. connection available.

  255. OPTIMIZING THE PRINTED OUTPUT
  256. ------------------------------ 
  257. By default, the printer settings that are set in The Complete National
  258. Geographic are general settings that produce good printed results for both
  259. text and graphics.  If you want to optimize the printer settings for either
  260. text or graphics, you can adjust the settings yourself to get your desired
  261. print quality.  Since the printer settings are different for text and graphics,
  262. if you optimize the output quality for one, this might reduce the output
  263. quality for the other.

  265. To optimize the printed output for text, select 'Optimize for Text' on the
  266. printer setup dialog.  Selecting this option will apply a filter to the printed
  267. output that will improve the quality of the printed text.

  269. To optimize the printed output for graphics, click the Options button on the 
  270. printer setup dialog.  You can then change the graphics settings to achieve 
  271. your desired printed output quality.
